CSP Projects Joint Webinar

Summary of the CSP Projects Joint Webinar
6 July, 2021

The consortium of the SOCRATCES project organized their first webinar focused on Solar Ca-Looping Integration for Thermo-Chemical Energy Storage on June 10th. The webinar was aimed to share the work developed in the project to construct a CSP-CaL integration prototype that reduces the core risks of scaling up the technology and solve challenges.

This first webinar had a great acceptance with around of 100 participants joining. The event was leading by Ángela Magno, project manager at Bioazul and dissemination leader of SOCRATCES project.

The first presentation was made by Ricardo Chacartegui, Professor of the Energy Engineering Department at the University of Seville, who did a project overview presentation and highlighted the objectives and main challenges of SOCRATCES. The next speaker was Umberto Tesio, PhD student at Energy Department of Politecnico di Torino, who made a comparison of different integrations of CaL-CSP through multi-objective approach.

The webinar continued with the presentation of Luis M. Romeo, Professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Zaragoza, who talked about the operational performance of CSP and Ca-L. The details about the carbonator modeling and construction were introduced by Kyriakos Fotiadis, Mechanical Engineer, MSc at Centre for Research and Technology Hellas.

Thomas Hills, Research Engineer at Calix Europe Limited, presented the options for scaling up solar calcination and Juan Jesús Arcenegui, Postdoctoral researcher at Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, talked about the use of steam during calcination in the CaL-CSP process: kinetics and cyclability.

Afterwards, the presentation of the integration of a power cycle with the SOCRATCES technology took place thanks to Muhammad Eusha, Project Manager at TTZ Bremerhaven. Paola Ammendola, Researcher at Istituto di Scienze e Tecnologie per l’Energia e la Mobilità Sostenibili, introduced the role of acoustic fields on the fluidized bed carbonation for TCES in CSP applications.
